چکیده

Introduction The continuous emission monitoring of the different compounds which are emitted by industrial facilities is an important topic to approve the compliance to different regulations like WID. However, there are several compounds which cannot be measured in real time. Specific dioxins/furans (PCCD/PCDF) and other POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) cannot be measured by online monitors. In any way the acceptance for continuous sampling of PCDD/PCDF as a good approach for continuous emission monitoring of these compounds increased over the last 15 years. In the meantime France followed the example of Belgium and demands by law the continuous PCDD/PCDF emission in all waste incineration plants. The increasing interest is also supported by CEN/TC 264 WG 1 which started a project to establish a standard for long-term sampling of PCDD/F and dioxin like PCBs (as EN 1948-5). Beside the emissions of PCDD/PCDF there are other emissions of compounds which are not or not so easy to be monitored continuously. E.g. mercury can be monitored continuously, but for plants with low concentrations in the range of ug/m the accuracies of the existing mercury CEMs depend very strong on the experiences and maintenance efforts of the operators. Otherwise the results are not accurate enough. Additional the availability of such systems is restricted. In the United States the new Portland Cement and the upcoming utility MACT rules accept besides the installation of mercury CEMs also the installation of continuous sampling systems for mercury. This paper will give an overview of the experiences of around 15 years continuous sampling of PCDD/PCDF emissions with continuous dioxin sampling systems and the resulted success for the reduction of these emissions. Additional it presents newest results of continuous sampling of mercury emissions in the low ug/m range in industrial facilities.

MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Background and Objective: Dioxins and Furans are dangerous and highly toxic compounds entering to the environment from natural and manmade sources. Having high stability and half-life, these compounds remain for a long period in the medium and bring about severe effects on human beings and the environment. The aim of this study was to identify dioxins and furans emis...

Development of a Jet-rempi Based Continuous Emissions Monitor for Dioxins

The need for a continuous emissions monitor (CEM) for the determination of dioxins and furans at realistic (parts per trillion or lower) concentrations in real time (minutes) is widely recognized in the waste management community. Such an instrument would enable rapid, and real-time experimentation on incinerators, so as to test and develop control strategies. It would also be extremely useful ...

Long-term study of environmental levels of dioxins and furans in the vicinity of a municipal solid waste incinerator.

From 1975 to 2004, a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) was operating in Montcada (Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain). Because of the potential health risks derived from emission of pollutants by the facility, especially polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs), a long-term monitoring program focused on measuring the environmental levels of PCDD/Fs near the facility, ...

Accumulation of organic and inorganic contaminants in shellfish collected in estuarine waters near Pensacola, Florida: contamination profiles and risks to human consumers.

We conducted a screening level assessment of contaminants in blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) and oysters (Crassostrea virginica) from bays and bayous in the Pensacola, FL area. Tissue samples were analyzed for 17 dioxins/furans, 12 dioxin-like PCB (DL-PCBs) congeners, mercury, and various metals. Contaminant levels were compared to screening values (SV) calculated using U.S. EPA recommendation...

Medical Waste

The most commonly used technology for dealing with medical waste, till recently was an incinerator. Incinerator, when introduced was supposed to be a wonder technology. A technology that would get rid of loads of waste by burning it and would leave behind some ash, that could be dumped. However, instead of solving the problem of waste, it aggravated it. It only changed the biological problem in...
